Meaning:

Mantra Pushpam

The set of seven cantos (78 to 84) contained in the first chapter of the Taittiriya Aranyaka, is popularly known as “Mantra Pushpam”. Aruna prasna contains a total of 130 cantos classified into 32 sections and Manta Pushpam is the 22nd section. One of the most common occasions where this is chanted is during a Pooja where it is offered as one of the upacaraas to the Lord-a garland of mantras and so is given this common name of Mantra Pushpam.

Mantra Pushpam, conveys to us the highest spiritual significance of water as the support for all and as the personification of all Divinities. If one understands and worships water from this perspective, the person attains all good in this birth and beyond. For such visionaries water does not appear as a mere entity to cleanse the physical body and to quench the thirst but as Divinity.

The section starts with the benevolent statement that, one who (ya) is knowledgeable (veda) about the pusham of water (apaam), becomes endowed with the flowers of life (pushpavaan bhavati), good children (prajaavaan bhavati), cattle and other domestic animals (pashumaan bhavati). Then an analysis pertaining to the relationship of Water with other aspects of nature and universe is given For example, in the case of Chandra (moon), it is believed that when the devas churned the ocean of milk, out came Chandra as a flower (pushpam). Lord Shiva placed this flower on His Head and so became Chandra Sekara! Because Chandra was born from water, water is the abode (aayatanaam) for Chandra (chandramaa va apaam aayatanam); also, the waters are generated by the coolness (sheetalam) of the moon and in this way, the moon becomes the abode of water (aapo vai chadramasa ayatanam). Similarly this kind of dual relationship exists between water and fire (agni), wind (vaayu), sun (surya:), stars (nakshatra:), clouds (parjanya:), and (samavatsara:). It is then concluded that, for the one who meditates upon this Divine Water, this entire Universe appears as a huge ship floating in Water and one who has this knowledge becomes established as a stiraprajna! (yoopsu naavam pratishtitaam veda pratyeeva tisthtati) and is hailed by all. (S. Yegnasubramanian.)

Yal-labhse nijakarmopaattam

            Vittam tena vinodaya cittam.

Foolish one! Give up the desire to accumulate wealth;

Without passion, create thoughts in the mind about Truth

7.

Baalastaavat kridaasaktah

            Tarunastaavat tarunisaktah

Vrddhaastaavat cintaasaktah

            Parame brahmani ko’pi na saktah

When a boy, one is attached to “playing”; when a youth,

One is attached to a young woman; when old, one is attached to

Anxiety; Alas! No one is attached to the Supreme Brahman!

8.

Ka ate kaantaa kaste putrah

            Samsaro’ yamativa vicitrah

Kasya tvam kah kuta aayaatah

            Tattvam cintaya tadiha bhraatah.

Ask who is your wife? Who is your son? This questioning

Process is exceedingly wonderful, indeed! Of whom are you?

Who are you? From where have you come?

O brother, think of that Truth here.

9.

Satsangatve nissangatvam

            nissangatve nirmohatvam

Nirmohavte niscalattatvam

            Niscalatatve jivanmuktih.

Through keeping company with the “good” there arises

Non-attachment; through non-attachment there arises freedom

From delusion; when there is no delusion, steadfastness arises;

through steadfastness, there arises Liberation in life

11.

Maa kuru dhanajana yauvanagarvam

            Harati nimesaat kaalah sarvam

Maayaamayam idam akhilam Budhva

            Brahmapadam tvam pravisa viditvaa

Do not be proud of wealth, family and youth; time takes

away all these- in a moment! Leaving aside this entire world

which is one of the nature of an illusion,

and knowing the state  of Brahman-enter into it.

20.

Bhagavadgita kincidadhitaa

            Gangaajalalavakanika pita

Sakrdapi yena muraari samarcaa

            Kriyate tasya yamenana carcaa.

For him who has studied the Bhagavad Gita even a little,

Who has drunk a drop of the Ganga water, and who

has performed at least once the worship of Sri Krishna,

the Destroyer of the demon Mura, there is no trouble  with

Yama, the Lord of Death.

21.

Punarapi jananam punarapi maranam

            Punarapi janani jathare sayanam

Iha samsaare bahu dustaare

            Krpaya pare paahi muraare.

Repeated birth, repeated death and repeated lying in mother’s womb-this

transmigratory process is extensive and difficult to cross.

Save me, O destroyer of Mura (O Krishna) through your Grace.

23.

Kastvam ko’ham kuta aayaatah

Kaa me janani ko me taatah

Iti paribhaavaya sarvam-saaram

            Visvam tyaktva svapnavicaaram

Who are you? Who am I? Where have I come from?

Who is my mother? Who is my father? Ask questions

Such as these and leave aside the dream-like world

Which is without essence.

24.

Tvayi mayi caanyatraiko visnur-

            Vyartham kupyasi mayyasahisnuh

Bhava samacithah sarvatra tvam

            Vaanchasyaciraad yadi vishnutvam

In you, in me, and everywhere-there is but One

Spirit. Your anger and impatience with me is in

Vain! (Anger coming from not wishing to accept

These truths). See the Self in all things, give up ignorance,

Which is the cause of “difference”.

25.

Satrau mitre putre bandhau

            Maa kuru yatnam vigrahasandhau

Sarvasminnapi pasyaatmaanam

            Sarvatrotsrja bhedajnanam

Don’t try to be at war with, or “on the side of” enemies a friend,

Son, or relative. If you went to attain Divinity soon, be “equal-

minded” towards all things.

26.

Kaamam krodham lobham moham

            Tyaktvaa’tmanaam bhaavaya ko’ham

Aatmajnaanavihina mudhaah

            Te Pacyante narakanigudhaah.

Give up desire, anger, greed and delusion; ask the question

“Who am I?” Those who do not have Self-Knowledge are

fools! They are tormented like captives in hell.

27.

Geyam gitanaamasahasram

            Dhyeyam sripatirupam ajasram

Neyam sajjana sange cittam

            Deyam dinajanaaya ca vittam

The “Bhagavad Gita” and the “Sahasranama” should be sung;

The form of the Lord of Lakshmi (Vishnu) should always

Be meditated on; the mind should be led to the company of

The good, and wealth should be distributed among the poor.

29.

Artham anartham bhaavaya nityam

            Naasti tatah sukhalesah satyam

Putraadapi dhana bhaajam bhitih

            Sarvatraisaa vihita ritih

Always reflect on the fact that wealth is not good because there

Is not the least bit of true happiness from the wealth; this is the truth.

Those who are wealthy fear their own son; this is the way it is everywhere.

31.

Gurucaranaambuja nirbhara bhaktah

            Samsaaraad aciraad bhava muktah

Sendriya maanasa niyamaad evam

            Draksyasi nijahrdayastham devam

Be completely devoted to the Lotus-Feet of the Master,

You will soon be released from the cycle of births and Deaths.

Through disciplining your senses and controlling your mind, you

Will behold the Divinity that there is within your heart.
